Townsville family roon

Family Room

This program is governed by the North Australia chapter.

The Ronald McDonald Family Room at The Townsville Hospital is located off the Children's Ward on the ground floor. It is a warm, welcoming purpose-built 'home-within-the-hospital' for the exclusive use of parents, carers, guardians and families caring for children accessing treatment as an inpatient or outpatient at The Townsville Hospital.

The Family Room is wholly staffed by our team of trained, caring volunteers.  We rely on the generous support of individuals, community groups and our corporate partners to keep our Family Room doors open to sick children and their families when they need us the most. Use of the Family Room and its facilities is free for guests, although donations are gratefully received.

Our Family Room is a non-clinical environment where families can have a break from the wards and hospital routine. Guests can help themselves to coffee or tea and make a bite to eat, as well as enjoy homemade cakes made with love by our wonderful Volunteers.

We provide the following facilities:

  • Full kitchen and dining facilities, including fridge/freezer, microwave, stovetop and oven
  • A relaxing lounge close to your child
  • A shower to freshen up
  • Two dark, quiet rooms for a short nap
  • Laundry facilities to catch up on your child’s washing without waiting to go home
  • Indoor and outdoor play spaces

Together with our wonderful supporters, we provide a large range of supplies to make your stay as comfortable as possible.

Hours of operation:

8.00am-8.00pm - 7 days a week

Please check notices on the Family Room door for Public Holiday operating hours.

The Family Room is 100% staffed by volunteers. We make every effort to fill each shift, however, there may be occasional times when the Family Room is closed or subject to limited hours.

How can you help?

We are always recruiting for Volunteers to join our 'Smile Squad' and help in all day-to-day operations of the Family Room. Similar to running our own homes, there is always loads to do and Volunteers can contribute in many different ways; such as greeting families, making tea, baking, household chores, and fundraising. Volunteers will be provided with training and support and become part of our special Volunteer Community.

If you would like more information about volunteering or other ways to help we would love to hear from you! Call us on (07) 4775 5600 or contact us here.
